1. Preparation
Slice the pork shoulder into long strips about 1.5 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick.
In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, Chinese five spice powder, garlic, and red food coloring to create the marinade.
Mix the marinade thoroughly until well combined.
Add the pork strips into the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
2. Cooking
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Line a baking tray with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.
Remove the pork from the marinade (reserve the marinade) and place the pork strips on the wire rack.
Bake the pork in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, brushing it with the reserved marinade halfway through cooking.
After 30 minutes, turn the oven to broil and cook for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the edges are caramelized and slightly charred.
Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
3. Serving
Slice the Char Siu into thin pieces.
Serve with steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, or in bao buns, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
